THE CORY STORY
Cory Peterson grew up in Bloomington, Minnesota,
graduated from the University of Saint Thomas in St. Paul, MN,
and served 6 years in the US Air Force.
While stationed in Los Angeles, Cory took a trip to Japan to
visit an old friend from Minnesota who was studying
Japanese and working part time. One night, this friend
and a group of 8 co-workers took Cory to a small, strange
bar. The bar consisted of several small rooms, similar to
banquet rooms. Inside each room was a long table and a
professional karaoke system.
“What the heck is this?” Cory asked. “Trust me” his friend
said. “You’ll like it. Everyone in Japan does this”.
Everyone started drinking, sharing appetizers and looking
through the song books. It was a little awkward for Cory
being the only one in the room who didn’t speak any
Japanese. But not for long…
After about an hour, someone decided to sing a song.
About 10 minutes later someone else sang one. Before
you knew it, there was a line 4 people deep waiting to
sing. Then everyone just started singing every song
together. The awkward feelings were gone, the language
barrier meant nothing and the drinks were flowing.
As the sun was coming up and Cory was climbing into a
cab, all he could think was “Why don’t we have this in
America?”
Since that day, Cory has been working to bring that
experience to America. "I tried running shows at bars
for a while, but that just didn't have the same effect", said Cory.
"It wasn't until I lent out my gear to some friends for their
house parties that I realized what the key element is to having
so much fun with karaoke; It's feeling safe, with no pressure
to sing well".
